"...and he probably should have tried to dodge. Ouch."

Figured I should mention that a firmware update for PS3 did in fact make my Hori stick compatible with PS2 games, yay! And, as I predicted, they're making a Dual Shock 3 now that they've settled that rumble lawsuit.

I think it's unfortunate that Sony is taking PS2 compatibility out of new PS3s. They do need to find a way to lower the price, though, if they ever want to get that install base up to the piont where they can start attracting more game developers, especially in Japan. Just glad I got a couple of the original 60 GB PS3s, I guess.

Moment of silence: That shot of Halley's Comet marks probably the last big dithered .gif you'll see here, at least of that particular type. The ancient 480p projector I was using to capture them (to a 3.5" floppy built in to the mammoth projector! woo!) has finally started overheating to the point of severe annoyance, so it's been kicked to the curb (or the closet, at least), and replaced with a fancy new 1080p projector that actually has no image capturing capabilities, and displays non-widescreen games at a slightly smaller size in my throw-distance-limited apartment.

On the plus side, it's way brighter, and the video captures I get from it will be a lot easier to see...at least until I munge them down into really compressed mpgs, anyway. Muhaha!

  PS3 + PS2 = No Joypaleface -- February 25, 2007 at 02:15:48

So VF5 came out, and I duly got a PS3--and then a second, Japanese one, because I was immediately in love with how they upscan all my old PS1/2 games to a nice smooth progressive 480p output.

The bad news--which I didn't bother reading about ahead of time--is that you're gonna have controller issues with PS2 games if you're trying to use anything other than the PS3's default SixAxis pads. There's a really great joystick out for PS3 already, Hori's "Real Arcade Pro 3," but it only works on PS3 and PS1 games; as soon as you boot up a PS2 game, it's like the joystick doesn't even exist.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a real adapter out yet that will let you use your PS2 controllers on the PS3. There are some simple PS-to-USB adapters, but these tend to have compatibility issues, plus they don't have the "PlayStation" button that PS3 controllers use for interfacing with the PS3 hardware menus. Supposedly a few companies such as Nyko are working on full-fledged adapters, but these are still at least a few months off.

You'd think that Sony would have an official adapter, considering all the custom PS1/2 controllers out there, and all the PS1/2 games people will want to play on their PS3s. I suspect that this kaboodle must have something to do with that force feedback lawsuit Sony got screwed with; after all, if you could just use a PS2 DualShock on a PS3, there you'd have that force feedback that Immersion or whoever it was decided was not Sony's right to give to people.
