Posted by exodus on November 08, 2023 at 14:10:11 EST in reply to I recently discovered that in Tengen's version of Tetris on the NES you can press A+B on the Game Over screen to restart the game. What's cool about this way of restarting (instead of just quickly pressing Start 3 or 4 times which is what I've always done) is that the the random seed doesn't get reset, so you can play the exact same game over again. In theory, it means you could memorize a perfect game and kill the high score table. I have too much self-respect to play Tetris that way, though, but it's a nice feature to use in cases where you felt like the random pieces were terrible and there was no way to do well. You can try again and see if there actually was a better alternative. I've done this a few times now and definitely have found cases when no matter what I tried, I still couldn't do well.

What's really striking about this discovery for me, though, is that I have put probably thousands of hours into this version of Tetris--I play it almost every day and have done for something like 25 years--but I'd never found this A+B trick before. Crazy that something so simple was there just waiting for me to find it all this time.

yeah, this kind of stuff is fun. I recently found that in the PC Engine version of Cotton, if you hit select at the start menu you'll get to some option, including changing the game text to english (it was already translated!). I found this on my second time loading it up, but still, neat when stuff's hidden in plain sight like that.
