I usually classify score based games as Challenge games, where the idea is to achieve a goal then to try and beat it. For instance playing golf vs someone is a game but playing golf on your own is just practice. I'm sticking by the win-lose situation. (n/t) from Darius.

Well, the score can be compared to someone else's score (or to previous scores of your own) if you want to, of course. Still non-game? How about a situation (I almost said "game") where you can only lose? There's no winning, the best you can hope for is to survive for longer before inevitably losing. Game or non-game?
