So Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is surprisingly awesome. It's like a 2D PSO. The interface is awful but the graphics are nice. Bill, Joel and I played it for just about an hour, and it was the most fun I've had playing a Castlevania since Simon's Quest. Yup.

Follow Ups:
HIGH FIVE! I can't wait to see what the higher levels are like. (n/t) (substance J) (03:13:33 08/05/10 EST)
So the time limit isn't detrimental? I plan on getting it but I won't be home for a week. Speaking of things that are surprisingly awesome, Hydro Thunder Hurricane is pretty great. My buddy got it and we proceeded to play it for three hours straight, swapping the controller back and forth to unlock stuff. (n/t) (twelvest) (07:52:39 08/05/10 EST)
So it seems you don't level your guys, you level their sub weapons to boost your overall attack stats. Food and status items might also have a permanent stat boost, I'm not sure yet. I spent another hour before bed trying Shanoa and S0ma. Found three more routes through the first castle. This game is SO RAD. (n/t) (substance J) (17:17:53 08/05/10 EST)
Okay I figured out how to level Charlotte's spells. You have to absorb additional copies of that spell, up to 9 copies each. Then they start getting hella powerful. Shanoa still makes no sense to me, apparently you have to find glyphs in boss chests, but some glyphs can also be absorbed (using magnes? maybe I should have played that Castlevania). I wish this game was a retail release just so it could have full documentation. There's sooooo much shit in here, totally PSO style. (n/t) (substance J) (03:21:11 08/06/10 EST)
I think it's very telling that you, Apples, and I all have compared it to PSO. It's really like a Castlevania-themed take on PSO, in a lot of ways. You keep going through the same areas with friends, picking up money and looking for cool new weapons, having to revive one another against the massive bosses, etc. It's really an amazing game. There will no doubt be plenty of DLC for this game, but that's kind of all Konami needs to do. Just keep adding interesting new stages, tons of new items, and some cool new characters and it's all good. The formula is almost perfect. (n/t) (Jeurja) (10:25:57 08/06/10 EST)
It's like a cross between SOTN, Dracula X, Guardian Heroes and PSO. Best game of the year. (n/t) (substance J) (17:05:57 08/06/10 EST)
Pretty apt description. And yeah, it might be GOTY. (n/t) (Jeurja) (22:43:10 08/06/10 EST)
hmm, that's kind of too bad. I was interested in it, but I'm not a PSO or Monster Hunter fan, nor a guardian heroes fan. a lot of people are asking me to buy/play it, but that sort of makes me not want to. I've got a month or so to decide though, I'll only be home a week in august. (n/t) (exodus) (13:17:17 08/07/10 EST)
So I bought this game, played it single player, played it with other people (5 other dudes, all had mics, all USA USA). You're wrong, this is not game of the year or anything. It's fun enough. More enjoyable than Portrait of Ruin and some other DS/GBA games I've played. I guess if you're thinking $15 is a fair price for a CV that needs friends, that's just better than other games in the series that cost more, then knock yourself out. I have so much more to mention but it's 3:30 and I just stopped playing this game cause I have to commute an hour and a half to work tomorrow. So many new discoveries I can't type up right now. SO GOOD. (n/t) (substance J) (06:43:46 08/06/10 EST)
I have this downloaded but I'm trying to get rid of the cancer that is Dragon Quest IX first. Just letting you know so you can insult me while playing for never joining in. (n/t) (aerisdead) (11:48:15 08/06/10 EST)
So I got into two 6-player games last night. This was amazing. YOU CAN RATCHET THE HAMMER UP AND SWING IT AGAIN. Alucard worked the lever, Johnathan wound the gears, Shanoa attacked the head, S0ma attacked the knee, and I ran around healing people. AMAZING. (n/t) (substance J) (17:05:08 08/06/10 EST)
I tried this but couldn't get into it. The change in beat from the usual take your time and explore rhythm is really jarring especially because of the interface. Neat idea though. (Darius) (17:42:55 08/08/10 EST)
I've started playing. I really don't like the lack of local co-op, but it is a neat idea. I'm not sure how to get more martial arts for jonathan, so I guess I'll have to look that up. I did find the first level really annoying, where the solution to one particular jumping puzzle is "keep hitting jump and occasionally you'll jump 3 times instead of the normal 2." That's kiiind of balls. but whatever, I guess! I got lots of treasures or whatevs. I don't want to have to play with random dudes who already know what they're doing though.
