KoF 2000 came out on PS4 this week; I was stupidly excited, but it turns out (this is conveniently not mentioned in the PSN store description) that it's just a port of the PS2 version--which would be fine (as long as your controller has a touchpad, since they for some reason mapped PS2 Start and Select to that : P) except that while the backgrounds look nice and sharp, the character sprites have this weird blur or antialiasing or something on them that actually started making my eyes hurt after a while. Oh well, back to the Dreamcast!

I've put so many hours into the PS2 version. Looks great on a CRT at least. Sounds like I don't have to upgrade just yet.

Yeah the sprite effect probably wouldn't really be noticeable on a CRT since everything would be a little blurred anyway.

On the contrary, it's displayed in a proper low resolution on the PS2, so everything's really sharp. Has a great arranged soundtrack as well. One of my favorite ports of that era.

That's kind of what I meant, but I didn't express it very well. :o The DC version has the arranged soundtrack too, it's really good! The DC version doesn't have the "Party Mode" survival thing or the "Maniac Strikers" (at least, I don't *think* it has Maniac strikers--I generally turn strikers off anyway. : P)

But it's so crazy! Also I don't know who to use! Who's good with Vanessa? I guess I was using...Ramon (?) in the Party Mode since it seemed to ignore the Strikers' "Off" setting, he worked all right.

I think the most used Strikers are Kim, Joe and Ryo, simply because they can extend combos so easily. But who needs those when you can also summon the likes of Fio and Rocky?

Ohh, right: when the AI is set to "Watch" mode, with Random enabled the game will swap all characters to new ones when one of the AI sides wins a round. I wish it would load a new random opponent when set to "Move" mode, oh well.

It's nice that you keep buying this these things but there's nobody left at SNK doing anything that deserves your money so I think you can call it a day, so to speak. And yeah, I can only imagine that it's weird since the PS2 era, as flush with software as it was, made almost anything 2D look weird. That's why have so few of those ports. Then you port it to PS3 and...well, I have a Neo Geo MVS and everything looks perfect on. Is see there is a copy of 2000 on eBay for $25 right now. If the "experimentation" side of things isn't too important to you (Let's see how bad THIS port is!) then I highly recommend that route. My MVS cost a lot less than a PS4.

I still don't know what happened during the PS2 days, where a lot of 2D ports were displayed in 480i or 480p when the system had no problem displaying at a lower resolution. If only those Street Fighter Alpha and Samurai Shodown collections would've looked half as good as Kof 2000.

Yeah, it had all kinds of recycled characters from NG Battle Collisseum. It's a ton of fun and looked great, despite the whole low res sprites on higher res background thing SNKP was so fond of.

Oswald! Well, the only one to return in really would have been XIII kinda, right? XIV is supposed to have a big roster, I suppose it's possible he could pop up in that--still, seems somewhat unlikely given how many older characters they have to pick from.

XIV seems like a good place for him to reappear, but the full roster has been leaked a long time ago and he isn't on there. I guess DLC is a thing now, so there's still a chance.

Also, you already have a PS4. You bought PS3 versions because you already had a PS3. You bough PS2 versions because you already had a PS2. You bought PS1 versions because you already had a PS1. Presumably there was some SNES in there. All this tech to (usually badly) emulate hardware that's 26 years old and has been perfectly emulated on PCs since the late 90s. I guess if you're a casual casual SNK fan that's fine but you've spent enough money on bad ports, fighting sticks, etc you could have easily had an actual Neo of some sort by now. I'm just being the guy that reminds you of that. Hell, simply buying the Sony machines after a price drop or two could have easily bought a Neo.

I *do* play other games on those systems. : D I guess I just never had an urge to own a Neo*Geo itself. Back in the day I was into emulating them, somehow that went away once legit versions of any such games came out on systems I had, though. Never had a SNES!
