I wish I'd seen this a while ago - in july I saw an MD hifi component set for (I think) the first time in my life, at a goodwill in las vegas, for $10 or something. I might have a few blanks, and sometimes they do come up when I'm at thrift stores. I can pick them up if I see them?

Those little stereos were really popular in Japan. In fact the last units Sony sold were little systems...in 2013, if you can believe that. YAJ is full of them, some are really clever since they include all that talking alarm clock stuff that never really caught on here either.

I can believe it. Back in 2012 I was in Japan and sat in a new Bentley model and it had a MD player in the dashboard. It was nuts!

I've toyed with the idea of putting one in my Miata. Mostly because it's a small car and also from 1992, same as MD. If I had a Bentley I don't think I'd be playing MDs in it. I'd have all McIntosh and CD, most likely. Seems more apropriate.

Ah, yeah, those are all over the place. They rarely do anything a portable recorder won't do but they stay hooked up all the time and have huge remotes which makes all that recording and titling stuff way easier. I have a MDS-JE520 I just used this morning to dub a copy of Blonde on Blonde before work today. I got it for free out of the recycling bin at WCBN. The analog input is blown for some reason. I haven't tried to fix it yet.

I stand corrected. I just read the manual for this thing and it has amongst its features a six second "time machine" which basically caches the most recent six seconds and when you hit record it adds those seconds to the beginning of the recording. Very handy for live recording or from the radio. When I think about it, this is actually a very easy thing to build into any MD recorder without any extra hardware specifically for it due to the way MD was designed (a read speed faster than required and the RAM to backup the difference) It's surprising that it took six years to appear. RELATED: An observation I've made recently is that anything which requires a manual to use takes longer to learn than more user friendly or GUI devices but is usually much faster and more enjoyable to use at the expert level, after there is nothing left to learn. My SLR is an obvious example of something that showed me that. Another would me my Tascam Portastudio. It had a huge manual that took forever to read but now that I know every feature on the thing it makes Logic Pro feel like a slow motion straight jacket by comparison.

Hopefully I'll release an episode of OG Ota explaining this, but the short of it is this: I stopped using my MZ-R90 as my main portable player in 2004 when I got an iPod Mini. It was a tough choice but I wanted more capacity and convinence and the iPod Mini was more than $100 cheaper than the upcoming HiMD players so I made the switch. In the end I have to say that for most things a Mini beats an MZ-R90. However, now it's 2016 and they don't make clickwheel iPods anymore, they make phones, and for whatever reason Apple has decided that it's their way of the highway when it comes to listening to music and I think I'll take the high road. "Music" (iOS) is an unrealiable PIT ASS and simply cannot be used "in a hurry" or with your eyes not on the screen. They've sabotaged my library to make me want Apple Music and it's never ever happening, not on my "main player" anyway. And with the elimination of the headphone jack they've sealed the deal. Fuck em. I left MD for Apple because Apple was more convenient, now they aren't, and the MZ-R90 still works %100 (even found a source for batteries) so I'm back to this and I genuinely love it. BTW, my iPod Mini still works too but Apple stopped supporting it at some time so you need to maintain a vintage computer and OS and iTunes to use it. With an MD player all I need is "audio". Of almost any kind. Translation: MD outlasted the iPod.

Oh no, I'll have to change a disc. Every hour even. Oh whatever will a poor soul do in such trying times? (See: humans vs pussies re: controller cord length on page 2). And no you don't get a GB. That would be alien super technology by the standard of 1992 not to mention a useless scale of measurement. You get 74 or 80 min. You get one or two albums in there. Just like CD except unlike CD you can double the length if you want to use mono. With iTunes Match I'm always carrying (when it fucking works) my entire collection of tens of thousands of songs. However if I take six or seven MDs with me that's also more than I'll listen to in a day. There reaches a point where more and more theoretical capability just becomes stupid, like WALL-E levels of stupid. I don't need three months of music on a device who's battery can barely make it through a day. You're more tethered with an iPhone than an MD player. An MD player will run deep inside an engineering building where cell signals suck worse than IT at getting you a WIFI password, and when the power quits? It can also use AAs. I can also record things to MD away from my computer. In stereo even. And, unlike an iPhone 7, you can power it off the wall at the same times as using headphones or use an inline headphone amp. You know that conversation in Ghost in the Shell where she's talking about how they are so dependent for maintenance and repair on their super L337 cyborg bodies that they basically can never quit their job? Well, I'm just tired of that shit fucking with my music. Lots of Apple's fancy shit is worth the surrounding sacrifices, this ain't it and I'm way more loyal to music than I am to them.

Correction, now I'm confused. I have a Nano that doesn't work with iTunes anymore either and that one is from about 2008 or so, I think. Lame. Super lame. This is a dandy little device too. A very nice color screen and the trusty click wheel in a tiny size, %100 functional. Now a paperweight...or is it? Looking around online I can't seem to find confirmation that *any* iPod has been discontinued. Even the FireWire-only original from 2001 can be made to work with iTunes 12, supposedly. However when I plug them in nothing happens. I'll have to look into this more but for now it seems I was selling Apple short on this issue.

This thread makes me want to buy an MD player again. What's a good model to look for? There are a million NetMD-era Sony's on eBay but they look kind of light and cheap. I had a Sharp MD-MS722 which must've weighed about half a pound. It was so cool, but I always wanted to get another unit just to see how other manufacturers did things. I'm not entirely nostalgic for MD - I found it to be kind of a pain in the ass, but for its time it was such a massive improvement over the reliability of CD players and, at least from my time with MD, fit into a very finite period of early 2000's Japanese technology and aesthetics that I'm nostalgic for.

I honestly haven't used very many players but I can certainly recommend the MZ-R90. It's not the smallest but it's getting there. All metal. The MZ-R900 is pretty cool too, basically the same thing but with MDLP added and a few annual improvements. My favorite player only portable is the MZ-E44 but I'm going to try some of the newer ones with the more ridiculous battery life. I recently discovered a Kenwood with over 300 hours of battery life. Suck on that, iPhone.
