I’m not sure what theory you’re remembering but I’ve restored a number of white things from yellow and my current understanding is basically that 1: all white plastic eventually yellows. If bleached back to white it will eventually yellow again and 2: if you want something to never yellow you have to paint it, which is a giant pain in the ass to do properly.

While it is proof that they are loved hard working machines I guess it seems like just another reminder that people don’t need of their own entropy…or maybe they just don’t like piss and cigarettes which it also evokes. It is interesting that the PCE, Saturn, Dreamcast, GB, and DS are famous for turning yellow and also famous for being kick ass machines whereas nobody every complains about the XBox or 3DO or PS2 turning yellow. Also, I should say that even black plastic yellows, it’s just much harder to see. You can sorta see it on some Genesis systems.

Purity yes, but I’ve seen some seriously aged PC Engines and SNES systems that are probably about the color of Ponce de Leon.

It's taken me most of my life to come to terms with what a dumb concept purity really is. I guess I used to think of it as a kind of excellence (or maybe even the other way around), but no, it's just emptiness. The thing of it is that it's so damned enticing until you understand that, though, and being a desirable thing with no value makes it a pretty good feeling to be co-opted by all the usual suspects that want to co-opt our feelings for stupid reasons.
